Food is vital to life. But hunger, food insecurity, nutritional deficiency and, by extension, lack of sustainable practices in agriculture present an on-going point of concern and crisis for the world.  Even in the U.S., In 2017, an estimated 1 in 8 Americans were food insecure, equating to 40 million Americans including more than 12 million children. It is encouraging that the global campaign to eradicate hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030 cover not just sustainable development goals promoted by the world community, but together have also become a rallying call in the U.S.  Consumers, and especially millennials, are driving a movement to increase transparency, awareness of healthy food, and social impact.

For health and well-being, food plays an instrumental role in the global health index. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 80% of chronic disease is caused by food. But the good news is 80% of chronic disease are also preventable or curable by food!

Larta Institute is a non-profit organization with a mission to “Feed, Fuel and Heal the world.” The organization works closely with innovators providing solutions in the sector of food and agriculture, energy and cleantech, and life sciences and healthcare. In its 25 years history, Larta Institute has consistently spotlighted a vast range of innovations from promoting earth-friendly, to the optimization of natural resources such as water, from the protection of biodiversity to the reduction of waste, from the role of foods in diet to the issues of food safety and the availability of nutritious and accessible food.

Larta’s Ag Innovation Showcase is a strategic platform to establish thought leadership in shrinking the value chain across food and agriculture. For 10 years, in St. Louis, MO, the Ag Innovation Showcase (AIS) or “Showcase” as it has come to be known, has been a premier event, focusing on exploring important developments and trends in food and agriculture has showcased scores of significant companies focused on food, agricultural biotechnology, plant nutrition and inputs, bioenergy and farm management, while also debuting important innovations in “waste to value” products and services, data analytics, robotics and logistics. It has also introduced discussion and exploration of the growing convergence between food and health.  Through pioneering presentations, curated special content sessions, talk shows and plenary sessions, Showcase has attracted a worldwide audience and has had a major impact on the growth of the sector. 

In its 11th edition, the Showcase comes to Minneapolis, MN, which hosts one of the largest foods and agricultural economies anywhere. The theme for this edition is the “Power of Convergence” harnessing the strengths of inter-disciplinary approach to provide solutions to global issues and engaging communities in sustainable agriculture practices through policy and programs.  This year through the event we will expand on the issues of food, health and resource optimization. To underscore our commitment to the extraordinary developments in “healthy living through food”, we will feature a Farmers’ Market and Chef’s Café, which will feature nutritious, delicious and functional food. 

This three-day event captures various sub-themes of regeneration and rejuvenation through plant health and nutrition and animal welfare, water and evolving food systems.
